Kanyakumari the tip of Indian mainland


Kanyakumari is one of the most visited tourist spots of India. It can be regarded as the southernmost big city of mainland India. The place is of extreme tourist and historical importance for it is the place where Swami Vivekananda meditated before leaving for the world religions congress where he delivered his famous "Brothers and Sisters of America' speech. The city is the meeting point of Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. It is also known as Cape Comorin.

Must Visit Places in Kanyakumari

The single most important place to visit in Kanyakumari is the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. It is built on the rock Swami Vivekananda meditated. The memorial is adorned with exquisite carvings and a huge meditation hall. You will have to take a ferry because the memorial is in the sea, 500 meters away from mainland.

Kanyakumari Temple is another important place that you must visit. The temple overlooks the shoreline and is dedicated to Devi Kanyakumari, the protector goddess of Indian shores. You must notice the notice the nose ring of the Devi's statue. It has a rather bright and very beautiful diamond. Please note that non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple.

Gandhi Mandapam is another important place to visit in Kanyakumari. This is the place where the ashes of Mohandas Gandhi were kept for public viewing. The structure has been designed in such a manner that on October 2, the rays of the sun fall directly on the structure. October 2 is the birthday of Mohandas Gandhi. Another important place to visit in Kanyakumari is the statue of Saint Tiruvalluvar. He was the most important poet of Tamil language. The statue is located at the confluence of the seas.

Must Do in Kanyakumari

There are a number of things you must do while in Kanyakumari. One of the most important things to do in the city is to notice the sunrise and the sunset. You will be hard pressed to find such a romantic place and such a romantic environment anywhere else in the entire country.

You must also visit the Suchindram Temple which is located just 13 km from Kanyakumari. This is one of the few places where the high trinity of Hinduism is worshipped together. There are musical pillars in the temple. The temple also houses magnificent pieces of art from various periods of south Indian history.

Apart from this, the 100 year old lighthouse at Muttom is another must see in Kanyakumari. A new and unique water amusement park by the name Baywatch has also been established in the city which is best for people traveling with children. Thiruparrapu falls and Olakaruvi falls are nearby the city and must not be missed.

Since Kanyakumari is a coastal city, you can enjoy all the activities that you can expect in such a place. You will get facilities for sailing, fishing, snorkeling, short distance cruises and much else. You must also try the cuisine of Kanyakumari. While you are in the city, make sure that you go to see the Kathakali dance as well.
